They loot their own country—more than a trillion dollars has disappeared offshore since the Putin regime took power. They brutally silence their critics. They have failed to use the bonanza of high energy prices for lasting modernization of infrastructure and institutions. They fear and despise their own people.

The problem is that the semi-colonial relationship that Germany seems to want with Russia is in fact a two-way street. As other imperial countries know well, you may start off exporting your values and outlook, but you end up importing theirs. German business was already surprisingly corrupt even before the great push eastwards that followed the collapse of communism. Dealing with Russia has accentuated that. Germany's commitment to the Atlantic alliance was looking wobbly from the 1980s onwards; now it is frayed and rotten. Rather than exporting German virtues to Russia, the danger now is that Germans are importing Russian sleaze, corporatism and anti-Americanism.

Perhaps most surprising of all the Panama Papers’ Russian revelations is the role that a St. Petersburg cellist and musical director has played in controlling a good chunk of Putin’s personal fortune. Fittingly, the man is also Putin’s best friend and godfather to his first-born daughter, Maria. Sergei Roldugin was previously known to own 3.2 percent of Bank Rossiya’s shares. He has now been outed as raking in $9.2 million a year and keeping $27 million in cash via a hitherto undocumented 12.5 percent stake in Video International, Russia’s largest advertising agency, which at one point controlled 70 percent of the country’s ad market. Video International was founded by Mikhail Lesin, Putin’s former press minister, who turned up dead last November in a Dupont Circle hotel in Washington, D.C., the result of “blunt force injuries of the head” and “the neck, torso, upper extremities, and lower extremities,” as the city medical examiner announced months later.

All in all, this is my favourite “off-diary” Sting gig since he took a million to perform for a family literally accused of boiling its enemies.
